Post about your favourite video games, cheat codes, boss battle tips, or basically anything else to do with video games..
(I put this here because it seemed...slightly...appropriate.

I've owned most video game consoles in my time.

I grew up with super mario and sonnic (sonnic was always a pain on some of the levels!)

I went on to become a huge fan of resident evil and final fantasy (I love final fantasy 10), I also (though I hate sport), got pretty good at the world cup football games

I am now an owner of an X-BOX, and play a lot of call of duty and saint's ro

(I did at 1 stage try gears of war, too!)

I'm more an RPG kind of person, although I've played some Halo games before (a game for the x-box) and it was pretty fun.
I haven't played Final Fantasy yet, I'm hooked on Skies of Arcadia right now, but I have Final Fantasy 7, so I'll play that after.

oh, and if you like Final Fantasy, you may like Skies of Arcadia (from here on referred to by me as Skies), it's for the GameCube (well, the remake is, the original was for the Sega Dreamcast.) The remake is basically the same, only it's got more sidequests and al1so no dlc's, the dlc's are just in the game itself. But it's a hard game to find, and kinda expensive.
It's similar, but different, to Final Fantasy, there's awesome ship battles, strange plot twists, and an enormously overused cliche... "You must savethe world by collecting these things that will awaken evil dudes who will destroy the universe"...oh and misunderstood villains.......

If you like Skies, might want to try Septera Core for the PC. it's a pretty decent RPG if you can play it (accessibly that is). Also fully voiced dialog, so no having to get someone to read the story to you or looking up a game script.

Post 8 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 17-Jan-2017 15:20:14

Wow, very broad ... Well, let's see.

I love video games. I always have. Mostly any genre, though Role Playing and adventure are my favorites. But anything that tells a compelling and well-written story. I am not a fan of open world games as much because they take forever. Unfortunately that’s the way games are going. They’re getting bigger, and I'm getting older. My backlog of unplayed games is getting larger every few months. Still have the Witcher 3, Final Fantasy XV(which I'll be avoiding until they finish all the major story updates they're planning to do) Broken Age, Day of the Tentacle Remastered, Soma and tons of adventure games. There's also Tales of Berseria coming out, plus Persona 5, and Mass Effect Andromeda - probably one of my most anticipated. Plus Resident Evil 7, which looks to be a pretty amazing return to the old school creepy survival horror RE games. Also a new one called Lorelei by Harvester Games, done by the same man behind The Cat Lady and Downfall, two really fantastic psychological horror games for the PC. For that last, I’m wondering about emailing the developer to discuss potential accessibility. The, like all those before it is a sidescroller with only light puzzle elements. There’s a lot of visual horror, but I don’t see any reason the core mechanics couldn’t be made accessible.

There’s also a game called a Hero’s Call for the PC being developed by two Visually impaired mainstream game players who lost their sight. They’re trying to make something on par with sighted RPGs in terms of immersion and story, because let’s face it, Audio games are, for the most part, lacking in those departments. The game’s been fully funded on Kickstarter and looks promising.

Code7 is another really good looking project. It’s a fully voiced text adventure set in the far future and deals primarily with hacking and artificial intelligence, plus a lot of branching dialog and choices. Very character driven story. The developer is trying to make this one accessible too, and is doing a pretty good job so far. Two higher profile accessible projects in a year; not bad.

I'm excited for the new Zelda game coming out, and I'm hoping they'll make a new Paper Mario game, like the old ones. They ruined Paper Mario with Sticker Star...but they aren't going back now I guess....

Post 10 by the oracle (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Tuesday, 17-Jan-2017 17:02:28

a game I forgot to mention (I believe it was nintendo), but james bond golden eye

I loved going around as james bond doing quests and hunting bad guys

(again, like sport, I dislike bond a lot)

but it always seems so diffrent when you're actually playing it yourself

Post 11 by Shepherdwolf (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Wednesday, 18-Jan-2017 3:40:44

Ha, this takes me back (Goldeneye, I mean). Used to watch my brother play that a lot when I was younger. That, and Perfect Dark.

Loved, loved, loved Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask...we used to own them both, and thankfully I had a sibling/friends who were good about explaining stuff when I asked. I probably never got the whole picture, but I got enough of it to get by.

Ditto Final Fantasy X, which is hands-down my favourite final fantasy game, although VI is also good. I like X because it's voice-acted, it's kind of a weird/interesting story, and while the game is extremely linear most of the time, some of the bosses are pretty neat. Also, the sound track; some really memorable tunes in that game.

I used to be a pokemon player, believe it or not. I managed to finish a game from each of the first four generations, and almost finished one from the fifth. I still sorta like the strategy angle - which is why I bothered getting into Manamon as I did - but I don't really play pokemon anymore. I got rid of all my handheld gear last year sometime when it really and truly dawned on me that I just...wasn't using it any longer.

I also used to be big into both the Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct franchises, particularly Killer Instinct. Never really got into StreetFighter or Tekken or anything like that, they just didn't do it for me, but I was a pro at Killer Instinct Gold...by which I mean I was probably at or very close to the level of expert sighted players, at least with one or two characters. Most of the attacks in that game make sounds just as they launch (whether you're kicking, shooting a fireball, jumping, charging forward or whatnot), and each character has very noticeably different voicing, so you learn how to play against each one (some are best to pelt from afar because they'll wreck you up close, some are best to counter when they attack, some are best beaten with overwhelming pressure). Loved that game so much.

I've always enjoyed watching people play video games, as long as I find the game itself interesting to some extent. I'm not too huge on, say, racing/soccer/football games; the only sports games I much care for are hockey and baseball, and even those get dull after a bit. I especially like RPGs or adventure-style games like Zelda. I think there's an element of nostalgia for me, since my brother has been dead for eleven years as of last October, and it was he, among others, who really got me to appreciate games in general.

Post 12 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Wednesday, 18-Jan-2017 11:20:46

I have a golden hologram Majora's Mask cartridge....Don't think I said that right, but...it's golden...and has a hologram/whatever it's called...and we got it cheap with the n64 and about 23 other games for.....i think 100 to 150 dollars? I forget. But it was a great deal, even if we didn't want half the games. We also got Ocarina of Time...but the first n64 game I ever played was.....PAPER MARIO. I love Paper Mario, especially TTYD (The Thousand Year Door) because I think its got the best plot, best music, and also best game play style of all of them. (although now that I think about it, the WII Paper Mario was awesome, just didn't like the Gameplay style.) I could go on forever about how much I think Paper Mario Sticker Star is stupid, but I won't, because....there's no point, and I'm sure some people liked it. (enough that they made more horrible games just like it)........
...
*looks longingly through space and time at the copy of Skies of Arcadia sitting on that shelf, in a different city*
And now I gotta go to school.
Bye

Shepherd, have you heard the remastered musif for Final Fantasy X? It was released when the HD versions came out. That is my favorite FCinal Fantasy as well. VI is a close second, despite the lack of voice acting. Chrono Trigger was also a fantastic game back in the day. And Chrono Cross had the most amazing soundtrack, as did Xenogears. If you're ever curious, you can go to gamefaqs.com and look uip the Xenogears game script. A lot of those older games have scripts on that sight under the FAQ sdection, but Xenogears is worth reading even if you don't play the game for its epic (and I use that term correctly here) story.

Post 14 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Wednesday, 18-Jan-2017 21:31:08

I'm very disappointed that none of you N64 owners have mentioned Mario Party! One of the best games ever to come out on any system. Since I started with that system, I'll list off more of my favorite games in it. Golden Eye was fun, NFL Blitz was awesome (the first one not the second one).

Back in the day, I use to also own a sega genisus. Loved lots of games on that including but not limited to the Streets of Rage series, Mortal Kombat (of course) comics zone, a few of the older football games and Street fighter too. Just because Street fighter was one of the first games I ever played on a genisus. NBA Jam was a pretty fun game too on the Genisus, though I did also enjoy it on later gaming systems like N64 and PS.

Speaking of play station, I just have to say that my favorite game on that system is probably Final Fantasy 7. It was probably my favorite game in that entire series. I don't know why, I just really enjoyed playing that one more than the others.

As for other systems, I'll list off games in no particular order since I've played games on most of the recent gaming consoles. Call of duty, Halo (all the halo games) Love the Mortal Kombat story modes that they've been doing in recent years too. Injustice, and I'm sure there are more games. I'm just drawing a blank at the moment.

Never actually could find a copy of Mario Party for the N64. How about this: Who's your favourite Nintendo character? I'd say the evil guy from Skies, but it's not TECHNICALLY A nintendo game, so I'd say maybe Waluigi. Or maybe Fawful...? or Count Bleck....or...or....or...DIMENTIO!!
(I like the evil ones)

I started on the super nintendo in the mid 90's with the first three mortal kombats, street fighter and others. I also did own a sega saturn, and later the n64 with many games including mortal kombat trilogy, dark rift, deadly arts, fighter's destiny, wwf warzone, wcw vs NWO, wargods. I hated motaro in mortal kombat 3, because you couldn't use any weapons on him.

Post 19 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Thursday, 19-Jan-2017 13:58:20

iww Sega. :p ...although they DID invent Skies....

Post 20 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 19-Jan-2017 16:24:51

Sega had their moments. Now a days Sega is a game developer rather than a console giant and Nintendo is ... well, they've gone an interesting direction. Honestly ever since the SNES< I've had no personal reason to own a Nintendo product. All the games I ever did want to play - barring a few - were on other consoles eventually. They DID however release Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem on the Gamecube, and that phinominal piece of entertainment has never been released "anywhere" else.

Post 21 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Thursday, 19-Jan-2017 18:24:28

After the GameCube, Nintendo hasn't made much of anything that I really cared about, except for Super Paper Mario, and Kid Icarus: Uprising. But even those...... I hate the WiiU, or at least most aspects of it. And the new system they're making....just, no.

Post 22 by Shepherdwolf (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Friday, 20-Jan-2017 1:57:33

A few things here:

1. Motaro from MK3/MK Trilogy. Pro-tip: use Sheeva. Seriously. Just do the teleport-stomp (down, up) and he will stand there blocking it till he dies. It's hilarious.
2. Haven't gotten around to checking out Final Fantasy X HD, Remy. Will have to give the sound track a look.
3. Mario Party series wreck controllers. Oh dear god.
4. We used to own a Genesis way back in the day, and I grew up on Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles in particular. Loved those games, even though I couldn't play them much without cheat codes.

Post 23 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Friday, 20-Jan-2017 11:08:04

2 words: Animal. Crossing.
The original. For the GameCube. (Gotta love that GameCube).
ooo, look at that, it wasn't 2 words at all. It was... *goes back to count* ...eleven.

Post 24 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 20-Jan-2017 18:24:29

Only games that really stood out on the Genesis for mere Castlevania: Blldlines, and Splatterhouse 3. I've heard great things about the Phantasy Star series, though never played it myself. THen, I was a super Nintendo kid in the sense that that was what I owned. Although if Super Nintendo had one thing over the Genesis it was the Sound quality. Everything on the genesis sounded the same for some reason. Having said that, I have very fond memories of the Sega CD, particularly the game Lunar The Silver Star Story, which was the very first RPG I ever played with voice acting, al be it very limited voice acting. It also had had one hell of a soundtrack, some of which still holds up today I think. It's remake on the PS1 was fantastic also. Why that series has not made a comeback I'll never know.

Post 25 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 20-Jan-2017 18:26:21

Sorry, that was supposed to be Castlevania: Bloodlines. Oh, and the Super Nintendo had Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Zelda: a Link to the Past, and Final Fantasy IV, V and VI. All fantastic RPGs.

Post 26 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Friday, 20-Jan-2017 18:43:38

Random fact: When joking around, I often refer to shooter games as "Pow Pow Shooty Games" because I can, and because I'm weird that way. :p

Now, a question for you people. Has anybody here played Super Mario RPG?

Post 28 by hardyboy09 (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Sunday, 22-Jan-2017 1:34:21

I'm wondering. All of the games you guys talk of are for specific video game systems. How do you play these if they aren't accessible, or do you have vision?

Post 29 by Blues_fan (Zone BBS Addict) on Sunday, 22-Jan-2017 4:28:57

I was wondering the same thing as poster 28. I really miss playing some of the shooter type games, but figured that was just too bad for me.

btw, I just bought Super Mario RPG today. yaaaaaaayy!!

Post 31 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 22-Jan-2017 16:47:52

The only one I didn't play was mortal kombat mythologies, along with special forces, but those were more adventure type rather than the others. As for street fighter I slaughtered that game as it's so easy to do.

Post 32 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Sunday, 22-Jan-2017 17:14:45

Mortal Kombat is boring.

Post 33 by Shepherdwolf (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 22-Jan-2017 18:43:26

To those asking about playing mainstream games:

It depends on the genre. Fighting games are by their nature quite accessible more often than not, and it just takes learning moves and accompanying sounds in order to figure things out. I learned most of Killer Instinct Gold's move list by experimentation, and the rest by being told (there wasn't much).
Now, games like Zelda and Super Mario are considerably harder. There's some blind dude who apparently beat Ocarina of Time, but as I recall he had sighted help (as in, he had instructions on how to move/how to position the camera/how to perform certain puzzles). My greatest claim to fame on that game is that I beat almost the entire Deku Tree with minimal help, and I can navigate the Spirit Temple pretty safely (not too many pits and whatnot). But for games where a lot of platforming/puzzle elements are present, you'll probably need sighted help.
Ditto shooters and sports games. Action is swift, so you will probably need help.
Paper Mario/Super Mario RPG are actually almost playable. I've played bits of the former with only a little bit of sighted help, and the latter I've listened to.
The pokemon series is probably the most noteworthy mainstream game that's fairly accessible. Every monster has its own sound, most attacks have their own sounds, walls bump when you hit them, doors open and shut, many puzzle elements make noise, interactables can be clicked on if you bump into them much of the time...so the games are pretty playable. You will never get the entire sighted-user experience, but you'll get enough to go on.
So yeah, that's how we do it. We find audio cues in games and we make those work for us. Or we get sighted help. Or both.

Post 34 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 22-Jan-2017 19:03:40

I've thought of getting back into gaming and picking mortal kombat back up again with the latest one, that being xl I believe. I don't know how easy the wrestling games are these days having only played wwf warzone and wcw vs NWO for the n64. I hear some have played the latest wrestling ones pretty good.

Post 35 by hardyboy09 (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Monday, 23-Jan-2017 3:08:22

Hm. If only I could play football. Lol.

Post 36 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 23-Jan-2017 11:05:29

Another wrestling game I played on the super nintendo was saturday night slam masters, and that was from the same company who made street fighter. Oh how this is bringing back memories and making me wanna get back into it again!

Post 37 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Monday, 23-Jan-2017 13:52:47

I believe the music created for Street Fighter also made the music for Super Mario RPG. not sure though...

Post 38 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 23-Jan-2017 14:36:29

Played Super Mario RPG back when I was in my early teens. Finished it. it was good, but my love of Mario has pretty much slipped away since that game. I do have some sight; enough to play games more or less, though with each console generation that comes out, I find it just that much harder. I'll always prefer 2D or fixed camera games over full 3D immersions, but sadly the 3D games are all the rage these days, so I just deal with it. Were I to lose my sight completely, or even a little more, I think I'd give up. As I stated, I play games for the narratives they convey. You can do things narratively in gaming you can't do through books, TV and Movies. That's why I stay. But I think if I ever dropped gaming completely, I'd get a lot more done creatively with my own writing, music and sound design. I kind of wish I could just let gaming go. But it's been such a huge part of my life that it feels ingrained into my soul. I'm actually surprised nobody seems all excited about Code 7 or a Hero's Call on these boards, considering they both look pretty interesting and are being made accessible; the latter was actually started as an accessible project before being made visual too.

Post 39 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Monday, 23-Jan-2017 17:17:49

Oh man, I completely forgot about the wrestling games. I admittedly haven't played a lot of the newer ones, but I use to love some of the older ones, especially warzone. That also goes back to reminding me about some of the older boxing games that I use to play too. Those were fun times.
I'm being reminded more and more about the times when like 4 of my family members would sit down and watch me beat videogames while egging me on. They would occasionally give me tips, but I use to take great pride on beating whatever I could by myself. Now days I'd probably cheat and look up walk-throughs to help me beat obstacles I couldn't figure out in games if the temptation was strong enough.

Post 40 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 23-Jan-2017 18:53:01

There appears to be a stigma amoung the gaming community against using walkthroughs. Yet walkthroughs are huge and always readily available. Personally I use them all the time. I usually don't play a game without one. I "can" do so, but I am the kind of person who likes to find as much of the story content in a game as possible. And I find walkthroughs keep me from missing such things. I can also get through a game a lot faster with one. I don't rush games, but as it takes me probably twice as long as sighted gamers (I've never actually studied that) to finish a game,, and because there are a lot of games I want to play, it's a more time-effective way of playing.

Post 41 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Monday, 23-Jan-2017 20:54:54

I like YouTube walkthroughs because it's easier to get what they're trying to explain.

Post 42 by hardyboy09 (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Saturday, 11-Feb-2017 22:52:37

Has anyone played Grand theft Auto without sight? I'm assuming this would be difficult, but. Hm. If only they could add on some modification to it.

Post 43 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 12-Feb-2017 16:03:16

Killer instinct was another I played on various platforms as well including the n64, along with others like fighter's destiny. There were plenty of cheat codes for the various mortal kombat games as well going back to the super nintendo that would enable you to unlock the bosses as playable characters, or give you many continues witch were usefull when fighting the bosses. Also n64 had that wonderful rumblepack if anyone remembers that neet little addon!

Post 44 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Monday, 13-Feb-2017 8:31:04

I remember the Rumblepack! That thing use to be a lot of fun. I also remember those bulky memory cards that we use to think were such amazing advancements of technology back then. Now look at the current systems. I swear, the N64 is nothing compared to what's out now. I really wonder what systems are going to be like 20 years from today...

Post 45 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Monday, 13-Feb-2017 17:56:51

My favourite system will always be the GameCube. It's got almost all of my favourite games on it: Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend of Zelda Four Swords........

Post 46 by Liquid tension experiment (move over school!) on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2017 8:41:06

you all who have sighted people to help you are lucky. I love all of these games, but I can't play most of them because my partner is mor blind than I am, and asking someone to come over just to help me read text on a screen? no way. I can see enough to play most things, I just wish I had some ocr solution to figure a lot of this stuff out. I tried downloading steam, because it has a lot of the older games on it, but of course the interface is strictly graphical, no text at all could be found by jaws or voice over.

Post 47 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2017 11:08:35

I think I mentioned this already, but Try Fable, maybe. It's basically all voice acting and it's an RPG, similar to Zelda but different.

Post 48 by Liquid tension experiment (move over school!) on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2017 12:35:06

but then you have all menus and things you need to interact with.

Post 49 by Remy (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 15-Feb-2017 13:36:14

You all should look up A Hero's call. It's a new RPG developed by Out of Sight Games. It had a kickstarter of 2800, and at the end of the campaigne it amassed over 10000. It's trying to bridge the gap between mainstream, narrative RPGs and accessible games. it's going to have full voice acting, and judging by some of the voice auditions they've gotten - my own included - they're going to have some genuinely good voice acting. Search for a Hero's Call Kickstarter on Google and they have a couple demos to hear. Plus more on their official website. Between that and Code7, this looks to be a decent year for accessible games.

Post 50 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Thursday, 16-Feb-2017 18:28:03

Already saw the "A Heroes Call" stuff, and am looking forward to see what comes out of it. As for the menus of mainstream games, you really need a sighted person only one time to tell you where things are, and that, if even. Then you should be able to memorize the menus yourself, or you can write down how many times you might have to arrow to get to whatever option you're looking for. I've personally done a bit of both.

Post 51 by HellTabby666 (Shh... quiet, you might piss somebody off.) on Friday, 24-Feb-2017 18:35:23

I play a lot of need for speed. I have tried various games, but the ost I play right now is need for speed: most wanted and sometimes need for speed: carbon. I can do the cop chases on most wanted, sometimes up to the point where they send helicopters after me. I also play GTA: san andreas. Since auto aim doesn't work for some reason I try to steal cars and burn them as much as possible. I don't play any story mode on those games, I just download completed saves and play since they are open world games.
